Sometimes we need to be reminded that love can happen anywhere, even in the dog park.

Most Sundays I take my k9kids there where they run free, swim in the river and meet their buddies. The remarkable thing is that hundreds of dogs of all ancestry, age and sexual preference gather there to rub noses and dish the dirt, without as much as a curled lip or raised hackle. Sure, there is a little posturing sometimes, and maybe a few stiffened legs or flattened ears,  but it’s more a place where friendships are forged and true love is born. Continue Reading

Love between different species is not as uncommon as you may think. I recently heard about an illicit affair between a swan and a goose whose rendezvous was on the River Thames … and they never gave a damn. These two love birds probably had no idea they had serious differences, and each must have thought they looked like the other … and who would have told them otherwise?
But usually, Mother Nature is actually pretty smart when it comes to keeping each to their own, and the word we use to describe this phenomenon is imprinting. I’m often asked, “How does my puppy know he’s a German Shepherd because he always makes a bee-line to play with his own breed type?”

And while dogs can interbreed, dogs are all part of the Canis familiaris (faithful dog) species, whether they are short, tall, round or flat, because there is no such word as ‘discretion’ when it comes to puppy love … hence the Jack-a-poos, Spoodles and Skip-pom-paniels of this world

I always read the pet classifieds section in the newspapers in case I miss something of monumental importance … well, one just never knows in my line of work. And although the column is occasionally dull, more often than not, it’s a inspirational gem and provides me with a really good chuckle, or sometimes, it also rips my heart out - like “Old dog, excellent with children, faithful, family companion, needs a new home - owners relocating.”…makes me want to call the owners and ask whether they will be dumping their two legged kids as well. Please help, my 2 year old German Shepherd will not eat his food unless one of the family members are present. We have tried leaving the pellets in his bowl but he will not touch it for days and would rather starve. I’m afraid he got this habit from when he was a puppy. Continue Reading

Our pets, no matter what species, are very precious to most of us and are in fact accepted as members of our family, which is the way I believe it should be. And as a result, their health should always be paramount and as important to us as the health of our human family members. Let’s face it, some of the smooth-skinned-two leggeds should be taking tips from them when it comes to loyalty, patience and unconditional love. Continue Reading

I get some really strange requests and hear some very funny things as a dog trainer and pet shrink, and this week was no exception.
I received a call from a gentleman who enquired about training and whether I had heard of a  “Part Alsatian, Part German Shepherd and 6% Wolf blood.” He also asked if I had any experience in training these dogs.

Now, for the uninitiated his question was  loaded …  this  lovely man was sussing me out to make sure I was good enough to handle his  highly valued dog …  sort of  like asking a disc jockey whether he’s ever won the July Handicap. Anyhow, those in the business know Alsatians and German Shepherds are one and the same dog, because about fifty years ago the World Kennel Union announced, “Same dog, same  name” … and ‘German Shepherd’ was gazetted  in stone.
