If your dog has been displaying a bad attitude, whether by fighting or though aggressive behaviour, here’s some advice that will help solve the problem. Hopefully, it’ll save your sanity too!

Question

We have 3 castrated, male Boerboel dogs which have recently started fighting for no reason. They have always been gentle with the family - especially the kids who can do anything to them.  What is worrying me is they may turn on us next! Are we at risk?

Kids and Dogs go together like a Love and Marriage  … or at least that’s the way it should be! But unfortunately it’s not always true because often little Johnny can’t even venture outdoors without little Jackie nipping him and making him cry.
Unfortunately the poor dog is always blamed for being out of control and dumped at the SPCA. Believe me, if the real culprit was to be disposed of, animal shelters would be bulging with unruly kids as they are almost always the real reason behind your puppy’s bad behaviour! Continue Reading

The most common problem I deal with is how to stop dogs jumping up onto people. This behaviour is usually conducted from the front but can also be achieved from the side …  and then there is the rear attack.

The assault from the front I call “Death by Slobber”, because the main aim is to jump up at people as high as possible, aiming at the victim’s face which is then roughly doused clean. However, this plan sometimes fails which can be a bruising and painful defeat when the assailant is a 60 Kilo Rotweiller whose cranium unfortunately collides with the victim’s chin. In boxing terms this is an ‘upper -cut’ which can lay a mature man out cold. Continue Reading

Heres a cautionary tale of why too much exercise worsens bad behaviour in dogs and creates a cycle of hyperactivity:

Wiz the Border Collie was in big trouble for his bad behaviour.
“I can’t keep him if he’s like this,” said Matt, his owner, “You see my wife says he goes or I do!” … tears welled, “But he’s my mate and I’ll do anything to get him right.”
Wiz never heard a word because he was too busy spinning and barking hysterically at the monkeys which had come to raid my kitchen - and when they left to break into the house next door, Wiz was so into Hip-hop-howl, Rap ‘n Yap mode, he hadn’t noticed them leave so Matt ‘took charge’ and the game was really on …  the more he screamed, “No!” the more Wiz heard, “Go!”
“See what I mean!” yelled Matt, “And our garden looks like a meteor site because he never rests!” Continue Reading

I have always admired people who rescue animals and give them homes. Especially those folks who take on multiple, needy animals which in all likelihood would never find a family and would in all probability have been put to sleep. But there is an ugly side to the story, when certain people who supposedly love animals keep them in such vast numbers and in such bad conditions that their lives become miseries - due to lack of medical attention, food and care. These people are known as animal hoarders. Continue Reading

The Pikes were a delightful family - Mom, Dad, Helen and Bailey the problem child … a   lovable Old English sheepdog who’d just had a No. 4 haircut. But Bailey had a really bad habit  … he just loved to hear his own voice barking which drowned any conversation in his presence. As a tiny pup in England, the Pikes had sought help for him but to no avail, because he had just got progressively worse over the last 8 years. Continue Reading
