Just as in any other walk of life, myths about pets find their way around the world and often in our mail boxes. And a common question that is asked is whether they are indeed fact, or simply old wives’ tales. So today I thought I’d turf a few of these well-worn myths into the Bark Ages where they rightfully belong! 
Fifty years ago, a small mutt of dubious ancestry became the most famous dog in the world. Her name was Laika and her fate was to be the first living animal ever to enter space.

Some say the dog’s intelligence is equivalent to a 4 year old child … to that theory I say absolute polony! I believe our best friend’s IQ is equivalent to a very smart, adult human. And I qualify this by adding that animals may have a different type of intelligence to ours but, nevertheless, just as superior. 
If more people understood animal hierarchy, there would be less aggression, less fighting, less blood spilt, fewer lives lost and certainly less dough spent on panel beating and repairs.
A shocking fact is your neighbour, friend or close relative may be a violent animal abuser without even arousing your suspicion. These devious people are past masters at masquerading as good citizens, protective spouses, loving parents and caring pet owners, when in fact, just the opposite is true. Animal abusers come from all walks of life and income groups and are not easily identified, although they tend to isolate their victims, are often overly sweet, quietly spoken and as convincing as any professional con artist.
I have always admired people who rescue animals and give them homes. Especially those folks who take on multiple, needy animals which in all likelihood would never find a family and would in all probability have been put to sleep. But there is an ugly side to the story, when certain people who supposedly love animals keep them in such vast numbers and in such bad conditions that their lives become miseries - due to lack of medical attention, food and care. These people are known as animal hoarders.
