Some say the dog’s intelligence is equivalent to a 4 year old child … to that theory I say absolute polony! I believe our best friend’s IQ is equivalent to a very smart, adult human. And I qualify this by adding that animals may have a different type of intelligence to ours but, nevertheless, just as superior. Continue Reading

Love between different species is not as uncommon as you may think. I recently heard about an illicit affair between a swan and a goose whose rendezvous was on the River Thames … and they never gave a damn. These two love birds probably had no idea they had serious differences, and each must have thought they looked like the other … and who would have told them otherwise?
But usually, Mother Nature is actually pretty smart when it comes to keeping each to their own, and the word we use to describe this phenomenon is imprinting. I’m often asked, “How does my puppy know he’s a German Shepherd because he always makes a bee-line to play with his own breed type?”
And while dogs can interbreed, dogs are all part of the Canis familiaris (faithful dog) species, whether they are short, tall, round or flat, because there is no such word as ‘discretion’ when it comes to puppy love … hence the Jack-a-poos, Spoodles and Skip-pom-paniels of this world
I’m constantly asked about moving overseas regarding relocating pets to other counties and what quarantine times are involved, so here they. Please bear in mind rules and regulations change constantly and the information I have provided here is condensed. Kindly also note I have used the word ‘quarantine’ to refer to a specifically recognised quarantine kennel/facility.
Do you sometimes get messages from your pet? Maybe your dog re-landscaped your garden last night? Or maybe emptied out all your designer cushions … or perhaps jumped the wall and gobbled down your neighbour’s 60th birthday cake. And your cat … has he ever brought you a surprise gift in beautiful, bright wrapping in the way of the Jones’s deceased parrot?! These aren’t insults mind you, but your pet’s way of communicating. I walked into my kitchen yesterday and nearly fainted. It was the attack of the bees which had found their way in through a window, although they seemed to be trying to escape? I deeply regretted the terrible massacre that ensued but the safety of my precious dogs had taken priority over an apiary in my oven. Mopping up the piles of corpses gave me the shivers as I calculated there was enough deactivated venom in my kitchen to kill a shipload of elephants! Continue Reading
I always read the pet classifieds section in the newspapers in case I miss something of monumental importance … well, one just never knows in my line of work. And although the column is occasionally dull, more often than not, it’s a inspirational gem and provides me with a really good chuckle, or sometimes, it also rips my heart out - like “Old dog, excellent with children, faithful, family companion, needs a new home - owners relocating.”…makes me want to call the owners and ask whether they will be dumping their two legged kids as well.
