Alet needs some advice on controlling her new puppy’s unwanted behaviour - namely jumping up at visitors and “snacking” on the contents of the cat’s litter box. Continue Reading

I just got a dog for my son …  and I think it was a fair swop. Just joking! I wouldn’t swop my son for two German Shepherds, even if he would go, because he was the only kid on the block who could catch a ball in his mouth when he was three years old. But I must explain that before the authorities start jumping up and down and getting tense - it’s really nothing to worry about because my Border Collie at the time really wasn’t neglected … he also had a ball to play with. Seriously though, I happen to believe that there are many many similarities between raising children and raising pets. Continue Reading

The Xmas decorations have all been packed away in the back of cupboards for another year - the presents have all been dished out, the functions are all over and there’s no cold turkey left in the refrigerator - and for better or for worse, 2007 is just another memory. Now parents, bless them all, are frantically preparing their kids for school … and as important as it is to educate our children, so do our canine family need to go to puppy school as well. Remember, a pet is a 15 year commitment, and if you want a well behaved, well adjusted family protector and companion, it is important to educate your dog. Continue Reading

Yesterday I saw a five month old Boerbull puppy who had been attacking and biting people since the age of three months old.  Juvenile aggression is uncommon, abnormal and will worsen without skilled intervention…which is exactly why you should always enroll your newest addition to the family into puppy school!

Hi Glynne,
We have a beautiful jack russel cross cocker spaniel, 5 yrs old. He is well trained and intelligent except when it comes to chasing (hunting) monkeys, ducks etc. He becomes headstrong and refuses to come when called and runs away from us when we try to catch him. This is the one area that we just have not been able to train him in as he will not come when called if he chooses not to. We have tried all sorts of ways to teach him but nothing works. Please advise.

Nothing raises peoples hackles faster than dogs and their barking incessantly. So, if you are an insomniac neighbour or a ’selectively deaf’ dog owner, this one’s for you. Listen up, because nuisance barking can be prevented and stopped, no matter what you’ve been told. Here’s how to cure incessant barking.

Who has said, “We had a break-in last night and my dog tried to lick the burglars to death!”
Well my question is: isn’t that exactly what you taught him to do? Doesn’t he sleep outside… didn’t you encourage him to be friendly with workers… didn’t you yell at him to back off and stop hassling the meter reader, pool man or garden services workmen?! And if you answered yes to any of these questions, you have trained him to be 100% burglar friendly!

Recently, I saw a lovely coloured photo in the paper of two dog handlers, a German Shepherd puppy and his owners who had donated him the SAPS. There they all were, happily frolicking in the grass with Woof who looked ecstatic at the prospect of his new career. Continue Reading
