Nowadays walking on a deserted beach with your dog is no longer a pleasure but more like running the gauntlet or trying to dodge land mines.  In fact, if you and your dog do survive the experience unscathed, consider yourselves are amongst the lucky ones … the other poor fish are statistics or at the vet, thanks to some dirty, rotten exterminators, otherwise known as unconscientious fishermen. Here’s why walking your dog on the beach has become so dangerous:

It happened at 5am this morning on my daily jog with my two trusty hounds. As we approached the Municipal offices, I looked up and in the half light saw a ghostly grey, shape of a dog about 50 metres ahead of me in the parking lot. I blinked but there he was …a German Shepherd type standing his ground - very strange behaviour for a stray as they usually hot foot it home, especially when confronted by what they may think is a three-pack-’posse’.
My first thought was to avoid a face off with my two dogs so I told him to push off, but he stood his ground which I thought was odd because I speak fluent Doglish … in fact he was actually calling me! Continue Reading

Every now and again, some know-all gets onto their soap box and preaches the deadly consequences of giving dogs chocolate. Here’s a cautionary tale to remind you to keep your pets warm this winter: I visited a friend yesterday and noticed on her window ledge, in a large cage, one of the most colourful birds on the planet. It was a Sun Conure, a small parrot, indigenous to South America, and his name was Monet in remembrance of the French Impressionist whose canvasses vibrated with brilliant colours.  And the little bird was well named because he too was a burst of dazzling yellow, orange, red, green and blue feathers.

Well known for his curiosity and vocal skills, Monet was uncharacteristically still and had puffed up his plumage, making him seem very forlorn. And when I got closer he stared at me through sad, round eyes but never budged from his perch. Continue Reading

More often than not, blindness in dogs can be caused by an injury. One terrible case I recall was Ajax a German Shepherd male who was prone to fighting a sworn enemy across the hedge. When his eye began to weep and he lost interest in life, his dad became concerned and marched him off to the vet. X-rays revealed the worst case scenario … a 4 cm thorn was embedded in his eye!

Another quick way of causing blindness in your dog is to allow it to travel with its head out of the window or on the back of a bakkie. Maybe it’s an ego thing for the owner who’s actually stupid enough not to realise grit and fine metal matter blows into their dog’s eyes and  lodges,   eventually leading to impaired vision.
