This week’s story is about rabies… It was reported recently that a baby was bitten by a large rat, resulting in the tragic death of the child. It struck me as out of character for a small, normally timid creature to attack with such viciousness as to inflict a fatal wound. This made me wonder whether the rat had not, in fact, been rabid. But we will never know because the rat escaped capture and the symptoms of rabies are only detectable 20 - 60 days after exposure. Continue Reading

One of the more distasteful behaviors we dog owners have to deal with is a nasty little habit some dogs have of eating feces, which is known as coprophagia. Now most of us can stomach our pooch’s penchant for hadeda and bird droppings or even an odd snack of herbivore poop, but when it comes to the acquired taste of cat scat, human feces or their own waste, we humans shudder in our boots at the thought of a lick from bullterrier breath. Nowadays walking on a deserted beach with your dog is no longer a pleasure but more like running the gauntlet or trying to dodge land mines.  In fact, if you and your dog do survive the experience unscathed, consider yourselves are amongst the lucky ones … the other poor fish are statistics or at the vet, thanks to some dirty, rotten exterminators, otherwise known as unconscientious fishermen. Here’s why walking your dog on the beach has become so dangerous:

It happened at 5am this morning on my daily jog with my two trusty hounds. As we approached the Municipal offices, I looked up and in the half light saw a ghostly grey, shape of a dog about 50 metres ahead of me in the parking lot. I blinked but there he was …a German Shepherd type standing his ground - very strange behaviour for a stray as they usually hot foot it home, especially when confronted by what they may think is a three-pack-’posse’.
My first thought was to avoid a face off with my two dogs so I told him to push off, but he stood his ground which I thought was odd because I speak fluent Doglish … in fact he was actually calling me! Continue Reading

Every now and again, some know-all gets onto their soap box and preaches the deadly consequences of giving dogs chocolate. Now that’s a laugh when the same smartass, in the same breath, is probably also singing the praises of commercial pet food … of which a whopping 102 major brands in the States are currently being withdrawn from the market due to their lethal contents! Here’s a cautionary tale to remind you to keep your pets warm this winter: I visited a friend yesterday and noticed on her window ledge, in a large cage, one of the most colourful birds on the planet. It was a Sun Conure, a small parrot, indigenous to South America, and his name was Monet in remembrance of the French Impressionist whose canvasses vibrated with brilliant colours.  And the little bird was well named because he too was a burst of dazzling yellow, orange, red, green and blue feathers.

Well known for his curiosity and vocal skills, Monet was uncharacteristically still and had puffed up his plumage, making him seem very forlorn. And when I got closer he stared at me through sad, round eyes but never budged from his perch. Continue Reading
