The topic I would like to discuss today is the plight of unhappy parrots who are so greatly misunderstood by their owners and who suffer life long lonely existences that truly denies their natural right. The other day I ventured into a Pet Shop looking for puppy toys when I saw the most heartbreaking sight ever. At the back of the neon lit dusty shop, there on death row, amongst other birds for sale, was the slumped form of a forgotten and unloved Ringneck parrot. Continue Reading

My garden must be the Ibis International Airport because every brown Hadedah in Africa lands here to refill or stop over between journeys. And some of these high flyers are so impressed by my trees that they decide to set up home here and bring baby Hadedahs into the world.

And while I am a Petshrink, I am also a bird watcher so I do feel suitably qualified to comment on a pair of Hadedahs who decided to raise their chicks right outside my bedroom window. One thing I do know about these birds is they have an excellent lungs, and at 3am their little voices sound like horse and trailer brakes locking down Fields Hill. Continue Reading

And as a result, their health should always be paramount and as important to us as the health of our human family members. Let’s face it, some of the smooth-skinned-two leggeds should be taking tips from them when it comes to loyalty, patience and unconditional love. Continue Reading

I feel ill when I see the cruel and disrespectful way luckless chickens are treated in the wake of this dreadful avian flu epidemic. Do people know of the true intelligence of the common old chicken? Continue Reading

I was having lunch yesterday with a friend who related a telephone conversation she’d recently had with her animal crazy daughter, Shalene who works on a ranch in California, USA. Now bear in mind it was long distance, Jill is a real softy, and as she told the tale, tears ran down her cheeks which set the stage for suspense! Continue Reading

Today is for all you bird fanciers out there. Especially those of you who keep birds in cages and neglect to spend as much time as you should with little Polly or Tweetie. Taking him on seemed like a good idea at the time, but sadly your pet bird has become a liability rather than a pleasure. Now the poor little fellow is spending more and more time on his own because you have less and less time to spare. And on the few occasions you’ve tried to make amends for your neglect by taking him out of his cage, the ungrateful little ‘devil’ has turned nasty and tried to bite you. Continue Reading
