Sonja needs Glynne’s advice on how to make grooming her pet easier - her little Maltese dog hates baths.
Question
Hi, we have a 3yr old maltese neutered male who has a huge aversion to being bathed or going to the parlour for a trim/shave. Becoming so bad that he recently started to bite/scratch. Even going to the vet is an ordeal, anything outside our yard seems too much. Any advise as to how I can calm him or make this easier on him and us?
Hi Sonja
Something has upset your little dog and now he is protesting. I am afraid the damage is done.
You will need infinite patience, lots of his favourite treats and Rescue drops for both of you which may help.
If not, a muzzle is your last resort. And if none of the above appeals, you may need to employ a behaviour consultant to work with him.
All the best and consider yourself lucky he’s not a Pitbull!

Dear Sonia
Have you ever been to a parlour and seen how dogs are actually treated? You would be horrified and then fully understand just why your pet hates to go. Rather go the route of home grooming and, either do it yourself or get someone who does this for a living to call when you are around. Your pet will thank you with all his heart for taking this trauma out of his life.
