This pet owner is distraught - her dog has gone blind after receiving an overdose of Ivermectine. Can anything be done? Ivermectine is a common medicine administered to treat dogs for mange.

Question

Please help. My dog has gone blind from an Ivermectine overdose just three days ago. Some sites say it may pass. Is there anything I can do? He is a young and healthy Lab. Please use my email. I would appreciate any info.

Hi Dorie
Sorry this is a free service for the benefit of all pet owners so email is not an option unless you would like to pay for a private consultation?
Now for your question and my answer:
• Do go to another vet for a second opinion and diagnosis about your dog’s blindness.
• Request a written report of his findings.
• Then report the offending vet to the Veterinary Council … and sue his sorry butt for negligence.
• If you are not happy with the second vet, keep going till you find one who you trust and who can help your poor dog recover from an overdose of this poison which was probably administered for mange?
• Do also have your dogs liver and kidneys checked for damage which may have also occurred from the drug.
A very sad story. Here’s wishing him a full and speedy recovery!
