Jennifer owns a Alaskan Malamute and a new Bloodhound. Unfortunately, the older dog and the puppy don’t get along - the puppy gets bitten and snapped at. How can this be stopped?

Question

Hi!

We have a 10 month old Alaskan Malamute named Audi. We have had her since she was 8 weeks old. She has been our only dog tell a week ago. Growing up we would have friends bring dogs over and everything was fine. About a month ago my sister brought her dog over for the first time and we found out she was very territorial over her food as my sister got bit by my dog and had to go to the ER. I then got bit by Audi also while another dog was around. I was not threatening her space and neither was the dog but I guess she was paranoid. I have since taken food right our of her mouth and she does not react (without another dog around).

Last week we fell in love with a six week old bloodhound. Probably not the smartest thing but we took him home. Audi tends to be very “overly” attentive to the puppy. And of course the puppy began to eat some of Audis food and the puppy was bit. Last night the puppy was walking around and went to start walking to the toy box and Audi snapped at him but did not bite. I don’t know what to do to make my dogs get along. The puppy just wants to play and Audi is just to aggressive. Please give me any suggestion you have about how to make them get along.

Hi There
You really need to brush up on your understanding of dog behaviour.
The oldest dog is always the boss and should be respected as such. Audi will make sure of her alpha role so don’t interfere when the pup gets disciplined or you really will finish up with blood on your hands.
Also remember not all dogs like each other and get along, in the same way not all people like each other, so why should your older dog feel like playing with a ‘snotty nosed brat’ who is taking over her territory, if she doesn’t feel like it?!
Wouldn’t you be P’d off if some one invaded your home, helped themselves to your grub, pestered you all day long and then got all your Mom’s attention? Of course you would!
Oh, and do check into a puppy school where both of you will be educated.

Glynne
