Joyce’s spaniel has been displaying obsessive behaviour. He wants to play fetch all day long. What does Glynne have to say about this dog’s obsession?

Question

We have an 11 month old springer spaniel. He likes to retrieve things (toys, sticks) ALL DAY LONG!! We are retired and home all day. Our dog gets LOTS of exercise on our 5 acre property. We are training him to stop when we say “all done”. But we are curious about this strange obsessive behavior. We have a friend who used to raise springers, and she’s never seen this behavior before. He never stops, even when we are sure he must be VERY TIRED. He has boundless energy, and it seems like the only way to calm him is to put him in his crate for a while. But as soon as we let him out, he starts again wanting us to throw his toys for him to retrieve.

Hi Joyce
Your dog has OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) which is very serious.
You really need some hands on help – if you are interested in a consultation please phone me on 031 761958 .
In the meantime, you must stop playing these games with him which has caused the problem in the first place. Keep him very quiet and calm and replace his throw toys with juicy, raw bones. Any exercise should be stopped or prevented immediately until he stabilizes.
The problem with this disorder is that your dog’s obsessive behaviour will deteriorate until you will no longer be able to keep him.

Regards
Glynne

i cant believe the response to this problem. i have two border collies that will fetch till they drop and drop they dont. when they are up in the morning they look at the top of the fridge where the ball is kept until they get it. and then it is over. i play ball for +- 15 minutes before work every day and again at lunch time. when i say goodbye to them to leave they drop the ball and dont touch it again. they run around the pool until u r mad but they dont stop. they nudge the ball into the pool and watch it go around with the filter and then fetch it out and start all over again. this can go on all day if they have the ball. my grass is taking strain and i now have bare patches but they insist on running all the time. i walk them every single day. i think mine are just over indulged and the problem is of our own making. just keep the ball away from them and u will have peace.

This is retarded. How is the dog going to behave when it suddenly gets NO exercise?

We try to keep our Q and A polite. However ‘retarded’ is not an adjective I take kindly to.
Let me guess. You are immature and uneducated and even if I explained my methods to you I doubt whether you would understand so I won’t waste my breath.
I suggest you check out my CV as well as contact my past clients (see www.petshrink.co.za ) who will provide feedback and explain how I have saved their dogs lives.
Retarded hey? Funny how we always see our own faults in others.
