Marthie has a 9 yr old Labrador that refuses to walk on his leash - can she still teach him to do so, or is it too late?

Question

Hi Glynne

I have a Labrador about 9 years old who doesn’t want to walk with his leash. I know it’s my fault, but can he still be trained to do so? When he was young I walked him with his leash, but for the last few years I was just too busy and working late etc and just played with him in the yard (quite big). Is there hope for us?
Thx.

Dear Marthie
Yes there is hope. Two things come to mind.
1. Some really yummy lures may just get the old boy up and out.
2. Another sure-fire way is to put him in the car and drive about half a kilometre away from your property. Take him out on his leash and he will walk home for sure. It’s a dog thing you know! Once you’ve broken the ice and he’s had a pleasant experience he probably won’t be so anti his leash.
Wishing you many future happy walkies together
Glynne

One Response to “Q&A - How can I teach my dog to walk on his leash?”

  1. Jojo's owner Says:

Why does my lab eat money?
My 1 1/2 year black lab loves to eat coins. He plays with other toys, but stops dead in in tracks whenever he see coins. I have taken many coins out of his month. He is so fast that I don’t always catch him in time…in those cases the money is processed along with his food.

    Hi Jojo’s owner
    You got me there!
Just remember if ever he gets ill to be sure and mention his unusual tastes to the vet who may have to do the ‘processing’ you mention, for him!
