Kerry needs some advice from Glynne concerning her two cats - the older one keeps growling and hissing at the newly arrived kitten.

Question

Hi Glynne,

Please can you offer some advice. We have just recently acquired a kitten (about 9 weeks old) and our other grown cat (almost 2 years) keeps growling and hissing when she sees the kitten. They are both female. We would like for them to get used to each other. How do we go about doing this?

Your help is much appreciated.
Kind regards
Kerry

Hi Kerry
You solve your problem with lots and lots of patience!
First, your cat’s nose is way out of joint so you have to let her know she is still Topcat in your eyes. .. Lots of love and cuddles and extra special munchies.
It’s very important that these two don’t share anything but have their very own of everything … scratch boxes, water bowls, food stations, beds , pillows, toys etc., etc.
Often there is resentment because they are forced to give up everything they hold precious, and this causes the hissing and animosity.
Good luck with the mediating.
Glynne

One Response to “Q&A - Cat hissing at kitten”

  1. Susan van Staden Says:

We also have the same problem with our two 8 year old cats - they are still not the biggest of mates. We have an 8 year old maltese (very spoilt) and two weeks ago bought a weimaraner puppy - Alice the maltese also gets her off days with Sally around, as the new puppy is very very active. Would we also have to have a lot of patience with the older pets to get used to the new pup?

Yes! In fact the older chaps are Grannies and Grandpas and I wouldn’t blame them at all if they object to a snotty nosed young upstart ruining their twilight years.
The new pup must respect his elders and with a bit of luck the oldies may just warm towards the new hell raiser.
Sally must attend puppy school and learn some manners. If you are in the Durban area please phone me on 031 7651958 for details of my puppy schools or visit www.petshrink.co.za . I charge R350.00 for two months (registration included)
Hope to meet you both soon.
