Steve’s little Fox terrier puppy has a bad habit of chewing up the plants in his garden. How can he stop this destructive behaviour?

Question

Dear Glynne

We have a 7 month old short leg foxie. He constantly chews up recently planted shrubs flowers etc to my wife’s frustration. He has an abundance of chewable toys, other puppy toys and chewable treats which keep him occupied. He however still likes to chew the plants up.

Will he grow out of this or must we resort to a more persuasive method?

Regards Steve

Hi Steve
Your puppy is chewing plants in frustration … none of my many puppies have ever been destructive because they are fed according to their needs, and feeding works, no matter what the self styled experts may advise.
Chemically treated ‘raw hide’, rubber and plastic toys, or any other human baby stuff is good marketing and designed to reel in the bucks. Carnivores want raw, meaty bones, not cute fluffy toys which are designed to bankrupt us.
Remember it is not natural for a puppy to destroy everything. Please feed him small frequent, high density meals with raw meaty bones in between and watch your garden grow.
Regards
Glynne
