Question

Hi Glynne, my name is Kyle Griffin, I layout the Crest magazine and find your articles informative and a necessity to the public and was wondering if you could give me advice?
Ive got a German Shepard cross Husky named Alaska, she’s 8 years old and I’ve had her since she was a pup.
She’s never had a litter of her own and think all bitches deserve at least one but worried about not being able to find a good home for all of them.
I don’t want to deny my dog her natural instinct to have puppies but might be doing the wrong thing in the end.
If you have any views on this matter I’d be grateful to hear them

Thank a ton

Hi Kyle
There’s an old saying which goes, “Our dog doesn’t eat meat … because we don’t give it any!” get it? Your dog won’t miss what she’s never known.
Apart from that, who says having a litter of puppies is fun? The answer will depend on which dog you ask!
Now for the other reasons why I say definitely ‘NO’ to breeding your dog:
1. You are not a breeder and she is not a registered dog. You may even lose her due to your ignorance regarding puppies.
2. The greatest cause of death in dogs is indiscriminant breeding. Approximately 80,000 dogs a year are humanely killed in SA a year because there just aren’t enough homes to around. Yes you may find temporary homes for cute pups but unfortunately they don’t stay that way forever.
3. And finally your dog is too old to have a first litter – she would surely land up in serious trouble which could cost her life or cost you a fortune.
Trust me – you don’t want to do it!
Best regards
Glynne
