When your pet suffers from allergies, it can be very difficult to figure out what is causing the symptoms and why. Anisa wants to know the long term effects of allergy medication on her Boerboel.
Question:
Dearest Pet Shrink
Firstly, thank you for your invaluable advice. It’s a goldmine to a first-time pet-owner like me! I have a three year old boerboel who, like his owner, suffers terribly from allergies. Winter seems to be his saving grace but as soon as summer comes around, Spikey is itching up a storm, drawing blood and generally looking as if he’s been to war and back. His vet says he could be allergic to absolutely anything and we’ll just have to manage the symptoms. I’m a bit concerned that whenever his allergies flare up, he is put on cortizone and steroids. What are the long term effects of such medication and is there anything else I can do for my baby? Please help.
Anisa
Hi Anisa
Thank you for your kind words.
Please note I am not a vet. For more information please Google ‘effects of cortisone’ and empower yourself.
You may also try the homeopathic route - there are trained homeopathic vets who have a lot of success with skin problems…
Take care of yourself and Spikey
