Alet needs some advice on controlling her new puppy’s unwanted behaviour - namely jumping up at visitors and “snacking” on the contents of the cat’s litter box.

Question:

Hi Glynne

We adopted a puppy from a animal rescue centre when she was 10 weeks. Bella has been with us for 2 months already and settled in very nicely. The big problem is her jumping up against us and every body else coming to visit. How can we stop this?
Also, she loves helping herself to the cat poo in the cat litter box..why and how to stop it??We keep it as clean as possible, but boy, she is quick.. I don’t think she can be hungry as we feed her morning and evening..

Thanks
Alet

Hi Alet
• Do not look at Bella when you arrive home and do tell your visitors to do likewise.
• A handful of her favourite treats thrown on the ground will also divert her attention away from you.
• Please educate yourselves and your puppy by checking into a puppy school where you will receive all the help you need to stop her bad behaviour.

Re. Cat poo is a delicacy high up on most dog’s favourite food list! So, keep the litter box even cleaner and place it out of her reach.
Yes, your puppy can be hungry because she has a very tiny tummy, just like any baby, and needs to eat small, frequent meals throughout the day. In my opinion two are insufficient … especially if she is a small breed. Big, juicy, raw, knuckle bones will be your salvation if you can’t feed her during the day.
Good luck
Glynne

I can identify with Alet as I have a labrador who is already a year old and he still enjoys “snackies” of cat poo! I have six cats, so it is a bit difficult to monitor the garden every minute of the day! He gets fed morning and evening, but heads straight for the garden ….. However, the dog trainer has assured me that nothing will happen to him. Wat maak nie dood nie, maak vet.

    Hi Lucy
Cat scat certainly seems to be an irresistible doggie dessert but I don’t think it’s all that healthy myself! It just may give your starving Labby (bet he gobbles his food) worms, diarrhea and Ecoli, etc., not to mention bad breath! So just remember not to kiss him because you may also finish up with some dreaded lurgy!
I would suggest you bar Poochie-Poopscoop from going anywhere near your cats toilets.
Wat maak vet, kan ook dood maak!

    hi
How do i get my one year puppy from barking. I live in duplex and there are lots of houses. And he causes a big noise.
    thank you

    Hi Vashka
You stop your puppy from barking by educating both you and your pup!
An alternative to attending puppy school, where you should get the appropriate advice, you would need the services of a behaviour consultant.
Unfortunately, barking is a life threatening problem as innocuous it may appear, because should your neighbours all complain you will either be evicted or you will have to part with your puppy!
As far as I know magic wands are not available in South Africa due to being an endangered commodity.
Check into a puppy school now because it’s the right thing to do.
