This Q&A deals with an old cat who won’t stop miaowing at night.
Question:
Hi there,
I wonder if you can help… My husband and I are at our wits end with our one cat, he is about 17 years old and still on the go. The problem is, is his excessive miaowing during the course of the night. It sounds terrible! It is only at night. He has a cozy bed to sleep in, he has more than enough food, he has access to the garden to do his thing. We have even kept him in the house during the night, but that does not help as well! He sounds like an ambulance! What can we do?
Hi Nomi
I am impressed by his imitation of an ambulance siren - boggles the mind!
Old animals often feel very vulnerable …just like old human beings.
So perhaps the time has come for:
• Him to sleep on your bed
• To have access to his favourite food throughout the night.
• To spoil him with his own ensuite so he doesn’t have to face ‘ghosty cats’ in the garden on dark nights…or perhaps he’s battling to jump in and out of the window?Give the guy a break – he is after all 119 years old in cat years. I can’t even jump on the bed anymore, let alone out of the window, and I’m nowhere near his age.
Give Ol’ Gramps a pat and a saucer of warm milk at bedtime, from me.

He might also be experiencing joint pain, which could be flaring up at night. My cat had arthritis and I gave her Bob Martins and Arthripet every day (both available from Pick ‘n Pay) and that seemed to do her the world of good. Also, I would massage her from time to time and she seemed to appreciate that.
Other than that I’d agree with the previous response that it could be your cat is just feeling vulnerable in his old age. Give him lots of love and attention and maybe make a sleeping spot for him in your bedroom.
