This soon-to-be new mom needs some expert advice about introducing her new baby to her 3 dogs.Â
Question:
Dear Glynne
Do you have any advice on introducing a new baby to my dogs.
I am 5 months pregnant with the latest addition to our family, till now our only babies have been 2 (i will admit it) overindulged Yorkies and a boisterous Lab. The Yorkies have the run of the house, which goes without saying… if you have ever had a Yorkie, it does not take them long to house train you. They are all generally well behaved but are very used to being the center of attention and I am very concerned that the baby will be very stressful for them. I really just want them all to get along. I have done some research on the subject, but am keen for another opinion.
Thanks
Hi Michelle
Dogs are pack animals, family orientated and social little souls, so a new born ‘puppy’ should be a joyous occasion.
Providing your dogs are socialized, friendly and not agro in way – here are some tips:
• You must allow your Fur-kids to remain part of the family and not alienate them in any way.
• While baby is still in hospital – present your dogs with a baby scented blanket which will provide a preview for what is to come.(Remember dogs sniff in technicolour )
• When the new baby arrives home for the first time, place her/him on the bed and invite your fourleggeds in one at a time to check out the new ‘pup’.
• Do not interfere with the inspection and initiation ceremony, and stay calm.
• Each dog will probably give little one a quick lick in recognition of a mini-you and settle down to help with baby duties.
• Make sure the doggies have been fed and have full tummies … which will make sure they are mellow and relaxed for the occasion. Here’s hoping everything works out okay for you and congratulations.
