Christmas is looming again and many are planning for a holiday away from home. And while some lovely folk take their pets along with them, many unfortunately cannot do so for obvious reasons. You will need to decide how best to keep your pets safe and cared for if you are going away. Responsible options are either a reliable or professional house sitter, or boarding kennels.
House sitters:
- A trusted domestic worker is an excellent choice.
- A reliable family member is a good choice, but watch youngsters because most are more concerned about partying than Fluffy’s welfare!
- Professional House sitters charge approximately R70.00 per day, supply their own food, and should have contactable references - a word of mouth recommendation is best.
- Do ask your vet for names of tried and tested professionals.
- Your pets should choose their own sitters - arrange for a meeting at your house and observe the interaction. The prospective house sitter should love animals and vice versa. Any shadow of a doubt on either side should be deemed a mismatch.
Kennels:
There are the good kennels which truly have your pets’ wellbeing at heart. And then there are bad kennels which are out to make as much money in the holidays as possible - often to the detriment of your pet. Avoid these establishments like the plague, as they overcrowd, underfeed, illegally medicate, and are unhygienic and understaffed.
To choose a reliable kennel, here are some tips:
- Arrive unannounced to inspect the premises.
- Walk around and take a look at the conditions, food and health of the inmates.
- Do not be fobbed off with excuses like, ‘It’s against regulations,’ or ‘It’s feeding time,” or ‘Our insurance won’t cover us if you walk around.’Â Baloney - you have every right! Should you be denied access, given them a big MISS and try somewhere else. Remember those who have nothing to hide, hide nothing.
 Unsuitable Alternatives:
- Don’t leave your neighbours to care for and feed your pets - this is irresponsible and the results are often tragic.
- Don’t leave your pets with a feeder to fend for themselves - this is criminal and considered animal abuse.
- Don’t abandon your pets in favour of going off to have a good time - this is cruel and selfish, and your heartless deed will come back to haunt you.
Act now and rest easy with the knowledge that your beloved pets are safe whilst you are away enjoying a well deserved holiday.
